CARE SHEET
Desert Horned Lizard (p. platyrhinos) Care Sheet

Size- 3"- 7" (even though this lizard is small it requires alot of space if you have 1 individual u can use a 20 gal but if more individuals, you add more space. I house mine in a 13 inch wide 3 and half feet long rubbermaid tub,
I cut the sides out of the tub and left about 6inches of the rubber on each bottom side so the sand dosent leak through i took some screen door sized screen and wrapped it around the tub and stapled it on the inside ..make sure the staples arent pointing out... and make sure they are not movable otherwise the HL could cut itself and that would be sad :(

Housing:

30 gal. is good for 2 individuals; if 3 or more I'd use a 40-60 gal.

Bedding -THIS IS IMPORTANT! 5 inches of sand ...DO NOT USE PLAYSAND OR ANY OTHER SAND THAT HAS SILICA IN IT !! THIS CAUSES GUT IMPACTION!
I use 6 inches deep of a 60/40 Natural sand and top soil (calci sand works, too).
Lighting- Need UV light about 12 hours each day
Heat light (75-100W)
Temps/ Humidity
Basking spot
100.40- 109.40 Farenhiet
Cooler area-84 -90 Farenhiet
Night
64 - 75 Farenhiet
Humidity-30-40%

NOW TO THE DIET.....
Harvester ants make up about 90% of the diet. You can purchase them from Antsalive.com.

Crickets can be offered-- 3 max

Feed 30-60 ants every other day

Dust insects with rep-cal or some calcium supplement

Dont try to get out of feeding them ants.. there is NO substitute for ants and w/o these ants they WILL die ..
SEXING-
Males have a bulge and the uppermost part of the tail.
Females do not have this bulge.

These guys love to dig and they are made to eat ants.

I don't recommend them to inexperienced herpers and people who get these have to have lots of harvester ants; 1,000 ants will last you about a month, but if you have more individuals it varies. 2,000 a month lasts me for 2 of them.

Breeding N/A at this time... will get info for it as soon i my HLs lay eggs
